The Shrinking British Military
British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond confirmed in a statement to parliament today that the British Army will be slashed by 20,000 troops over the next decade as part of a new strategic plan called Army 2020. Nearly one-fifth of standing forces will be relieved of their duties as 17 major units are culled and many others shrunk in the effort to limit the army's force numbers to 82,000, its lowest level since the Napoleonic Wars.

My Comment: They are cutting the British military to a level that would make it ineffective to fight any future major war .... but not cut enough to make it lose it's ability to teach future units on what it takes to function as a military force.

Based upon the assumption that they'll have the needed TIME to recruit, train, and equip these needed forces if there is some future crisis.
Modern military equipment is not cranked out by the thousands in a day any more, nor are Soldiers.
This is a formula for defeat.

I had to giggle at the comment "These cuts are needed to create a best-in-class Army" - Typical lying bean counter who understands NOTHING about what he is doing.
I'll give him points though - the British Army WILL be 'Best-In-Class" because by cutting to 80,000 (assuming anyone stays IN the Army) troops puts them in the same 'class' as Kenya, (I was going to use Uganda, but they'll be more than twice as large), Georgia, Uzbekistan and other well-known world-military Heavyweights.
Way to be Best In Class there, guys. It's like watching an aging national rugby side moving down to play in the under-14 leagues.
