U.S. Is Now Focusing On The Removal of The Assad Regime

Stymied At U.N., U.S. Refines Plan To Remove Assad -- New York Times

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has for now abandoned efforts for a diplomatic settlement to the conflict in Syria, and instead it is increasing aid to the rebels and redoubling efforts to rally a coalition of like-minded countries to forcibly bring down the government of President Bashar al-Assad, American officials say.

Administration officials have been in talks with officials in Turkey and Israel over how to manage a Syrian government collapse. Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta is headed to Israel in the next several days to meet with Israeli defense counterparts, following up on a visit last week by President Obama’s national security adviser Thomas E. Donilon, in part to discuss the Syrian crisis.

My Comment:
What I find remarkable in all of this talk and reporting of U.S. efforts to remove the Assad regime in Syria is .... the total lack of debate and discussion in Congress, the media, academia, special interest groups, pundits, etc. .... on what is essentially a decision by the White House to overthrow a government by all means necessary short of war. Not only is there no debate .... but no debate or discussion in an election year .... when in the past .... debates on war and peace were always front and center.

Case in point .... after months and months of debate .... we went to war against Iraq because many believed that Saddam Hussein had WMDs. The Syrian government admitted yesterday that it not only had WMDs .... but was willing to use it against an "aggressor". Am I the only one who is seeing a disconnect here?
