Shabaab Fighters Flee Last Port In al-Qaeda Allies' Control -- The Telegraph

Senior Islamist commanders and foreign fighters fled the last city held by Somalia's al-Qaeda-allied rebels as African Union coalition forces continued to advance.

Heavy weaponry, vehicles and logistics equipment including generators were being removed early yesterday, and buses and pick-ups crammed with al-Shabaab fighters were pulling out throughout the day.

"They are heading away towards various locations, some are going north, some are going into the forests," said Abdi Qani Ahmed, a trader from the city, Kismayo.

High-ranking al-Shabaab commanders had already fled overnight and were believed to be as far as 50 miles away by morning, Mr Ahmed added.
