An explosive mix of dysfunction, miscommunication, and misunderstandings inside and outside the White House led to the collapse of a historic spending and debt deal that President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner were on the verge of reaching last summer, according to revelations in author Bob Woodward's latest book.
The book, "The Price of Politics," on sale Sept. 11, 2012, shows how close the president and the House speaker were to defying Washington odds and establishing a spending framework that included both new revenues and major changes to long-sacred entitlement programs.

My Comment: Bob Woodward focuses on Democrat - Republican discussions (and politics) on the debt deal. But he ignores the previous two years when President Obama and the Democrats had super majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives .... a perfect time to put together a debt deal. But like previous Republican administrations who had both the White House and Congress .... no deal ever evolved.
Unfortunately .... the truth is that both parties have little if any interest to reign in government spending. Their focus is to spend money on their constituents and on their supporters .... not limiting and/or stopping their spending. But the debt is rising .... and there will be a day of reckoning when those who finance our debts will realize that we cannot continue to burden future generations with our need to spend money today.
