Syrian Rebels Take Key Military Base -- The Guardian

Capture of the Mayadeen compound follows the seizure of an army airport in the same area last week

Rebels seized a key military base with artillery stockpiles in eastern Syria on Thursday, strengthening their hold in an oil-rich strategic province bordering Iraq, activists said.

The rebels have made advances in Deir al-Zour province recently, and the capture of the Mayadeen base followed the seizure of a military airport in the same area last week. In the country's north, meanwhile, the two sides have been locked in a deadly stalemate for months.
