China Shores up Territorial Claims -- Voice of America
China has long had territorial maritime disputes with its Asian neighbors, but over the past year tensions over its claims in the East and South China Sea have seen a dramatic uptick. Beijing is using everything from establishing a new city in the South China Sea to weather reports to take a more assertive stance.
As a rising maritime power, China is using a wide range of measures to shore up its territorial claims.
In July, Beijing established a new city and military garrison on the island of Sansha, extending its reach further into the South China Sea. Next month, police on Hainan island will begin to search and board foreign ships that enter its claimed territory.

My Comment: The Chinese are not going to bend .... and it appears that some Asian leaders and thinkers are beginning to understand that. What does not help the situation for these Asian leaders is that there is also a growing realization that the U.S. does not want to be directly involved in these border disputes.

What would make you say that? You have some of the most idiotic comments, for someone who is frontline in the news and media... We are shoring up every avenue there is to shore up, and when they (Han Chinese) pull the trigger, all Diplomacy, and if i had it my way all DEBT, WILL BE DELETED OFF OF THE TABLE. America keeps the peace in the Pacific, pulling out of Okinawa is not retreat, but a realistic posture, which American Leaders have planned for years. America's Military Juggernaut is positioning for a fight, and it's plain to see, unless, of course you are the web master of this News Page!
Thank you Scott for your comment. Reuters has a good post on these border disputes which I linked to a few weeks ago, but I should have for this post. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/16/us-usa-asia-maritime-idUSBRE8BF0I020121216
No one has the stomach in the West to get involved in another war .... especially against China. But on my last trip to China in September I was struck on how nationalistic the Chinese have become in just two years (2010 was my last trip). Even among my hosts I went through details on what it may entail if everything goes south on these border disputes .... financial sanctions/trade embargoes/political isolation/war .... but they were not/are not listening. I guess they are in denial of what may and can happen.
Will there be war in Asia .... no. But do expect Chinese ships and soldiers enforcing China's claims to these territories and confrontations between Chinese-Japanese and Chinese-Vietnamese naval boats in the months to come. As for the U.S. and President Obama .... this is their nightmare scenario .... not Syria, not Iran, not Afghanistan.
yes sir, a very interesting story to say the least. I do however, agree with your comments! The West does not have the stomach for the 'nightmare scenario', although China possibly does. One thing that i often think about though, is how backwards and odd their culture and language are. I would go there in a heartbeat if i had a chance, finding them incredibly fascinating.
Thank you Scott for your comment. For your info I've been going to China since the mid 1980s .... becoming somewhat of a Sino specialist for a few Russian news outlets at the time. I always remarked then .... and it holds true to this day .... that culturally the Chinese have no match in the world. They are 5,000 years old and counting .... and as a westerner who had the luck to live in it for awhile (and still do at times) it is quite an experience that I would recommend to everyone. But politically .... I am rolling my eyes on this one .... they are still at the kindergarten level .... and this is what makes them very dangerous in today's nuclear world.
