Millions tune in every week to watch agent Carrie Mathison battle valiantly to protect the US against terrorism in the hit TV show Homeland - but the reality is most federal workers hate their job.

Those are the findings of a recent survey to measure the job satisfaction of millions of American government staff.

And it was the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - set up in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks - which comes out worst with only 52.9 per cent happy with their job.
