Algerian PM Says Two Canadians Among Militants In Terrorist Attack; One Had Key Role -- Globe and Mail
Two Canadians were among the extremists who attacked an Algerian gas plant and one of them played a key role in the hostage-taking that left scores dead, that country’s Prime Minister said Monday.
Abdelmalek Sellal told reporters that a man believed to have been Canadian – “judging by his English accent” – was among the 32 Islamists who seized a gas plant in the north African country.
“A Canadian was among the militants,” Sellal said. “He was co-ordinating the attack.”
He offered little information about the purported Canadian, not revealing if he was killed or was among the 3 attackers who survived. He identified the man by a single name: Shadad, or perhaps Sheddad. Reuters is using this spelling: Chedad.

My Comment: I am a Canadian living in Montreal .... and I am willing to wager that these two dead Canadian militants are from Montreal. There is a large Algerian community in Montreal (we all share the French language) .... a community that grew during the height of the Algerian civil war. And while almost all these Algerian immigrants are law-abiding citizens, there is a radical element in the community. Ahmed Ressam (the Millennium Bomber) lived only a block away from my downtown apartment .... and among my Algerian friends, they have warned me repeatedly over the years that they hope that some of their countrymen are being watched by Canadian intelligence.
This is a breaking news story .... I will be updating it during the day .... as well as talking to some of my Algerian friends for their input and analysis.
