U.S. General Takes Control of Afghan Coalition Force -- Wall Street Journal

KABUL—U.S. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford assumed command Sunday of coalition forces in Afghanistan, tasked with wrapping up America's longest overseas war and bringing home most of the 66,000 American troops still there.

Gen. Dunford is the fourth commander of the Afghan war in three years, taking over from Marine Gen. John Allen, who awaits Senate confirmation to become the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's top military commander.

He faces considerable challenges: training Afghan forces as they assume responsibility for the country's security, pressuring an insurgency that remains resilient, and providing security for next year's presidential polls.
