David Cameron will today express remorse for the ‘deeply shameful’ Amritsar massacre when he visits the scene of the worst single atrocity of the British Empire.
The Prime Minister will visit the Golden Temple – the holiest shrine for Sikhs – close to where British soldiers gunned down at least 379 peaceful protesters in 1919.
Mr Cameron, the first sitting prime minister ever to visit Amritsar, will go far further than the Queen, who visited in 1997, in voicing regret for the slaughter which Indians believe claimed 1,000 lives.
