Seven Marines were killed and several others were wounded after an explosion occurred during a miliary training exercise at a base in western Nevada used by the military's most elite warriors, the Marine Corps said.
The blast occurred at around 10 p.m. Monday during a live training exercise the Hawthorne Army Depot, a 147,00-acre munitions storage facility and training base just east of the California line and some 140 miles south of Reno.
According to local reports, a 60-millimeter mortar exploded as soldiers from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp LeJeune, N.C., were preparing to fire it during live-round exercises.
