There was a time not so long ago when experts dismissed North Korean threats to attack America as impotent rants issued mainly for propaganda purposes. Now that the Stalinist hermit-state has successfully tested long-range missiles and atomic weapons, though, such statements have to be taken seriously.
Compared with the strategic arsenals of Russia and China, North Korea’s fledgling nuclear force is small and primitive. Its missiles are unreliable and its atomic weapons are too big to deliver using those missiles. But that’s the situation today. Robert Gates predicted when he was defense secretary that North Korea would be able to launch nuclear attacks against U.S. soil within five years, and leaders in Pyongyang are working hard to make that prediction come true.
