The New Middle East Reality?

This Means War? -- Charlie Gillis, Macleans

The muted response to Israel’s strike on Syria is just one more sign of a troubling new Middle East reality

The mission went off with surprising ease. In separate sorties over the weekend, Israeli warplanes slipped unopposed into Syrian airspace, wiping out missile sites and destroying a major military research centre near Damascus. In past years, it might have been enough to trigger a full-blown crisis—Syria answering with a tit-for-tat strike; Israel pressing the U.S. and other allies for support; the entire Midle East watching helplessly as the cycle escalated. And there was certainly no lack of fuel for outrage: on Monday, Syria’s Arab-language news agency circulated pictures showing the smoking expanses where the bombs had landed, killing as many as 42 people.

Update: Why doesn't Syria retaliate against Israel? -- Omar Kosh, Middle East Monitor

My Comment: In the past .... an Israeli strike of this magnitude against Syria would have resulted in a war and an international crisis that would put the entire Middle East on edge. Today .... the situation on the ground is different and the players are now repositioning themselves for the eventual fall of the Assad regime.

no it wouldn't have. here you go again insinuating without taking facts into consideration. As i recall, the IDF took out a couple Nuclear Reactors years ago. The other day i read something you wrote which was also very far from the truth, as well. Who are you, and why do you write things that are not truth. Funny how i know of a Liar who lives at 1600 and says some things that we just know is BS but just tells lies like, oh well, nothing better to say. IT'S QUITE DISGUSTING AND SELFISH when you write things you know that people will know is a lie, but hou write it anyway. Very rudimentary SIR!

Thank you Scott for your comment. We agree to disagree. I am well aware of the Israeli strike against a building that was being prepared by Syria to house an experimental reactor from a few years back .... I also remember how tense the entire region became when it happened .... even though everyone denied it had taken place. That event was covered extensively in this blog , and I remembered crediting the White House for defusing the situation. A few years later we now know that it was General Petraeus who was sent to Damascus to talk with Assad. Unfortunately .... that is all we know. I look forward to the day when he writes a book about his experiences in the region during his tenure there. I am sure that he will illuminate many who are curious about what was really happening behind the scenes during that time.

As for today .... the situation in Syria is very different. And as I repeated in my commentary .... everyone is now positioning themselves for the fall of the Assad regime.
