Taliban Steals The Show In Afghanistan Peace Talks, Again -- Amanda Hodge, The Australian
THE debacle of this week's still-born Afghan Taliban peace talks - on again/off again within 24 hours - was best summed up by an astute journalist who accused the US State Department of having "pulled out of the garage and hit a major pothole instantly".
Within hours of what was to have been a crowning moment in Afghan President Hamid Karzai's rocky second term - the Tuesday morning announcement of the final transition of security from NATO to Afghan forces - his Taliban foe once again demonstrated their ability to pour rain on his parade.
Inside a neat compound in the Qatar capital of Doha a cluster of bearded officials - all of whom looked to have been grazing in a good paddock during what have been lean years for Taliban foot soldiers - raised the white Taliban flag, still a symbol of terror for many ordinary Afghans.
