The Afghans Need American Air Support -- Wall Street Journal

I witnessed how the Afghan Army will collapse without adequate helicopter transport after we leave.

America’s combat role in Afghanistan is scheduled to end in 2014. In anticipation of that transition, several media outlets have run stories predicting that without helicopter support from U.S.-led International Security Assistance Forces the morale and combat effectiveness of the Afghan National Army will be seriously degraded. That prediction is spot on. How do I know? I’ve already seen it come true.

I was a civilian adviser in the first district to fully transition to Afghan security control in the summer of 2012. Bala Murghab was the only Pashtun-majority district in our northwestern province of Badghis, and it had a strong Taliban presence. But we were selected for early transition because ISAF command believed our a battalion of some 600 Afghan troops, was ready. Better yet, our district represented a microcosm of the Pashtun-dominated areas of the southeast. It was, in other words, a good place to experiment with transition.
