NATO to Limit Post-2014 Footprint in Afghanistan -- Wall Street Journal

BRUSSELS—The North Atlantic Treaty Organization Wednesday laid out its most detailed plan yet for a mission to train, advise and assist Afghanistan's security forces after 2014, calling for restricting coalition trainers to five locations in the country and for assisting only high-level commands.

At the end of a two-day meeting of alliance members in Brussels, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the U.S. has committed to being "the largest-single contributor to this mission" and to playing the lead role in two regions—the east and south of Afghanistan.

Mr. Hagel said Germany and Italy will take the lead in two other regions—the north and west—while Turkey indicated that it is "favorably" considering taking the lead in Kabul.
