Breedlove: No-Fly Zone Over Syria Would Constitute 'Act Of War' -- Stars and Stripes
NAPLES, Italy — Rather than a quick and relatively painless affair, any effort to dismantle Syria’s air defenses as part of enforcing a no-fly zone would be tantamount to a declaration of war, cautioned NATO’s new military chief, Gen. Philip Breedlove.
“It is quite frankly an act of war and it is not a trivial matter,” said Breedlove, NATO’s new supreme allied commanderr and head of U.S. European Command, during a recent Thursday to Naples, Italy.

I have a question, can't the U.S just get Russia to secure those weapons? I mean they already have advisers on the ground. If the U.S is really so worried about chemical weapons wouldn't it be best to strike some deal with Russia to safeguard and transport those weapons in the event of an Assad defeat. I'm sure even Russia would not want Islamic elements to grab a hold of those weapons - could you imagine a dirty bomb going off in Chechnya or Dagestan.
The biggest worry in Russia is a dirty bomb going off in Moscow or St. Petersburg. When the Soviet Union collapsed .... everything turned upside down .... including nuclear materials. Securing these materials have been incredibly difficult .... now just imagine how hard it would be to secure such materials .... including chemical .... in a sectarian war zone like Syria. In short .... it would be very difficult .... involving the deployment of hundreds of thousands of men and equipment. A deployment that no one in Moscow or Washington are willing to even contemplate.
But could the Russians not get Assad to move all his chemical weapons and group them for one large shipment in the event he feels he can no longer maintain control of them? Assad is allies with Russia I'm sure even Assad could understand the value in making sure those chemical weapons don't fall into rebel hands to be retaliated against in the Alawite regions. I understand it would require some man power but if Assad has his troops work in coordination with Russia in shipping them I think it could be done. The U.S could definitely see the value in that. Though I guess it's just an issue no one really want's to touch. I can't blame them, but if these weapons get into extremist hands I pray for all for it would only be a matter of time before a dirty bomb attack.
