Blast at Tyndall Air Force Base Causes Highway to Shut Down; No Injuries Reported

An Air Force drone crashed and exploded on the runway of Tyndall Air Force Base in the Gulf Coast region of Florida on Wednesday, prompting the shutdown of a nearby highway.

The drone, known as a QF-4, crashed on takeoff at the base near Panama City, officials said. Responders shut down U.S. 98, which runs along the Gulf Coast, due to the potential risk of fire from the incident. The highway was expected to stay closed through Wednesday evening. No one was injured, officials said.

The plane was a full-size Air Force target drone. Unlike sleek, modern craft used for reconnaissance and targeted-attack missions, the QF-4 is modified from an older F-4 Phantom fighter plane, which has a design dating back to the 1950s.

"It's used as a moving target to test weapons," an Air Force official said.
