Why The SAS Will Not Abandon It's Training Regimen After This Weekends Tragedy

The deaths of two members of the Territorial Army on a training exercise over the weekend will inevitably lead to calls for the MOD to undertake an urgent review of its training procedures. How is it possible, many people will ask, that in the modern age it is possible for soldiers to die of heat exhaustion while training? Surely with proper monitoring and supervision such tragedies could and should be avoided?

Without in any way condoning what happened this weekend on the Brecon Beacons, the traditional training ground for recruits to our Special Forces, it must be remembered that in order for units such as the Special Air Service (SAS) to maintain their reputation as one of the world's elite units its members must undergo rigorous training that tests them to the limits of their endurance. Far better to find out on the training ground that an individual is unable to deal with certain harsh conditions than to learn it on the field of battle.

My Comment:
I think everyone understands that "tough training" is part of the job if you want to be an SAS soldier. But clearly one must monitor the soldiers when they are training so that such disasters do not happen .... in short .... a safety net has to be in placed and it must work. But it is clear that in this case .... it did not.
