The president has awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military honor, to Staff Sergeant Ty Carter, 33, for heroism during battle in Afghanistan.

Carter received the award in a White House ceremony today, making the Washington state resident the fifth living recipient of the decoration for heroic actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Obama praised Carter's bravery and hailed him for 'his courage in the other battle he has fought,' making reference to the veteran's ordeal with post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.
