US Military Has Myriad Ways to Strike Syria in Potential Operation -- Voice of America
WASHINGTON — U.S. military planners have a range of air, naval and ground assets that could be used against Syria in response to a suspected chemical attack that Washington blames on the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that President Barak Obama "believes there must be accountability" for the alleged use of chemical weapons in the August 21 attacks in several rebel-held Damascus suburbs. The Assad government has denied responsibility and blamed the killings of hundreds of civilians in those areas on rebels.
Alexandria, Virginia-based security analyst John Pike of GlobalSecurity.Org said the U.S. military has four Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers in the Mediterranean, in the 6th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
