What Did President Obama Mean When He Denied NSA Surveilance Abuse On Jay Leno's Program?

The Questionable Line Obama Used To Deny Surveillance Abuse on Leno -- The Atlantic

There's one statement that the president made on The Tonight Show Tuesday night that's worth paying particular attention to. The president told host Jay Leno that the Snowden leaks hasn't shown that the government abused its surveillance powers. Maybe not, but that doesn't mean the government hasn't abused them.

Obama's claim came in response to Leno's question about whether or not the embassy closures were the result of NSA surveillance. The clip is below; transcription via HyperVocal.

My Comment: President Obama is a lawyer by training .... so when he talks about important and sensitive issues it is always with a mindset from his training that he has to be careful with what he says. When asked this particular question (NSA surveillance) .... it is obvious that he is doubly so (in being careful) on what he is saying. Fortunately .... Snowden's revelations on the NSA have changed much of the discussion on NSA surveillance .... and the politicians are having trouble justifying their past actions .... including President Obama. From my viewpoint I say this is excellent news .... we need this discussion and we need to know what is happening .... and if abuses have happened .... we need to have people held accountable for their actions .... including President Obama.
