Two Million Syrians Have Fled The Country

UN: Number of Syrian Refugees Tops 2 Million -- Voice of America

The United Nations refugee agency is calling attention to what it calls a "tragic outflow" of people from Syria, where civil war has now forced more than 2 million people to flee the country.

A year ago, the number of refugees was about 231,000.

In a statement Tuesday, UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres called the situation "a disgraceful humanitarian calamity" not seen in recent history.

Most of the refugees have gone to neighboring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, where governments have had to cope with the strain of hundreds of thousands of people in need.
