This Logo Wasn’t Authorized By The NSA -- Wall Street Journal
Does the above image look like a logo authorized by the National Security Agency or does it look like a joke?
You may have guessed that it’s a joke, but the NSA isn’t laughing. A couple of years ago, it banned a leading custom merchandise retailer from selling t-shirts, mugs, and posters imprinted with that image.
Dan McCall, the man who came up with the design, isn’t laughing either. He’s accusing the NSA of violating his First Amendment rights in a complaint filed in federal court this week.
Mr. McCall’s lawsuit claims the NSA wrote to Zazzle.com demanding that the retailer remove NSA parody products from its site or face legal action. NSA claimed the products violated a provision of the National Security Agency Act of 1959, according to the lawsuit. That provision states:
