'Robot Warriors' To Fight On Real Battlefields -- The Guardian

• more and more autonomous weapons systems
• new warning as campaigners call for ban

Armed drones, unconventional warfare, special forces, private contractors, rapid developments in technology, are changing the nature of the battlefield beyond recognition.

They have profound implications for existing international law as well as ethics and morality. And however much campaigners may wish to ban them, drones are here to stay.

So warns Noam Lubell, professor of International Law of Armed Conflict at Essex university, in an inaugural lecture to be delivered tonight (Monday, 18 November).

In his important lecture, "Robot warriors, terrorists, and private contractors: What future for the 'laws of war'"? Lubell notes that "the image of the actor on the battlefield often does not conform to the model picture of a soldier in national military uniform".
