US Directly Challenges China's Air Defense Zone By Flying Two B-52s Over Disputed Island Chain



B-52 Bombers Buzz China’s Expanded Air Space As Dispute With Japan Escalates -- Washington Times

U.S. authorities have flown two B-52 bombers over disputed islands in the East China Sea without first giving Beijing a heads up — a direct confrontation to China’s authority in the region and its recent declaration of a newly expanded air defense zone.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the bombers took off from Guam and entered the newly designated Chinese Air Defense Identification Zone space about 7 p.m. EST Monday, a U.S. official reported.

China didn’t try to contact the planes as they flew over the islands, The Journal said. And the crafts returned to base soon after takeoff. But the fact they flew at all was a clear message to China that the United States didn’t approve of the nation’s weekend designation of the ADIZ.
