Last month there was a period where Elizabeth Palmer was the only United States network correspondent inside Syria covering the country’s devastating and brutal civil war.
And last week on CBS Evening News, she was the first to break the story that Iran – despite repeated denials – has indeed been directly involved in the conflict.
Palmer is certainly a journalist’s journalist, as thorough as she is brave, and – right now at least – she’s telling some of the most important stories in the world. With each passing day in Syria hitting a macabre new milestone – 140,000+ killed, 1,000,000+ children refugees – I caught up with Palmer on a brief trip back to her home in London. Below she gives her personal reflections on the state of Syria now, the risks of doing the job she loves, and why women with “cell phones in one hand and hubble-bubble pipes in the other” will always have a place in her heart.
