Karzai, Kerry Talk About Possible U.S.-Afghan Security Deal -- CNN

(CNN) -- Afghanistan's President talked Tuesday with the top U.S. diplomat about a possible new security agreement between the two nations, one that could lead to American troops in the war-scarred country well past next year.

Both sides acknowledged the conversation, which came ahead of an upcoming meeting of Afghan leaders -- known as a Loya Jirga -- to potentially sign off on a deal.

White House spokesman Jay Carney noted that a "general agreement" had been reached last month. There have been talks in the weeks since "to finalize the text," including Tuesday's discussion between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
