South Korea To Expand Their Air-Defense Zone And To Defy China's Declared Air-Defense Zone

Seoul To Expand Air Defense Zone Over Reef Also Claimed By China -- Asahi Shimbun

SEOUL--South Korea plans to expand its air defense zone to cover a reef claimed by both Seoul and Beijing after China put the isle in its own zone last month, government sources said Dec. 3.

The submerged island of Ieodo in the East China Sea, which is under Seoul’s administration and houses an ocean research center, has been under Japan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) for decades. China included the reef in its ADIZ announced on Nov. 23.

The South Korean government will hold a national security policy coordination meeting by the end of this week to finalize the plan, according to the sources.
