A deal to release America's only prisoner of war in Afghanistan in exchange for five senior Taliban commanders appears to have broken down at the 11th hour.

The Taliban says it has suspended 'mediation' with the United States to swap U.S. soldier Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for suspected terrorists held in U.S. custody in Guantanamo Bay.

It is the latest blow to what was considered the best chance yet of securing the 27-year-old's freedom since his capture on June 30, 2009.
