Majority Of Russians See Their Country As Superpower – Poll -- RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, March 17 (RIA Novosti) – A majority of Russians believe their country is a great power and an important player in the international arena, an independent pollster said Monday.

Some 63 percent of respondents said modern Russia has regained the status of a superpower, the highest level in the history of the poll, conducted by the Levada Center since the 2000s.

The poll showed 48 percent of Russians want their country to be seen as a superpower respected by the world, while another 47 percent said they would rather live in a country with high living standards but without great power ambitions.

My Comment: Russia is a nuclear super power ....but that is about it. I do know that most Russians (myself included) prefer a better standard of life over being perceived as a world global power .... bread and butter issues will always trump image perceptions. But there is an agenda behind this poll .... and it is coming from the Kremlin. Putin's Achilles Heel is the Russian economy .... if it suffers his support will erode and Russian dissent against his rule will increase. But for the moment .... at least in Russia and in Crimea .... his support is probably at an all time high.
