Pentagon: North Korea Poses a 'Growing, Direct Threat' to U.S. -- National Journal/Global Security Newswire

The Pentagon on Tuesday said North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and strategic missiles poses a growing danger to the United States.

The Defense Department in its 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review stated that "North Korea's long-range missile and weapons of mass destruction programs -- particularly its pursuit of nuclear weapons ... is a growing, direct threat to the United States," the Yonhap News Agency reported. The QDR document is a congressionally ordered four-year assessment of the U.S. defense strategy, force structure and programs.

Senior U.S. defense officials say they are monitoring North Korea's work on a new road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile, though no flight test of the weapon has yet taken place. The Pentagon is also concerned by Pyongyang's expansion of its nuclear-weapon material production complex.
