Russia Facing Massive Ukrainian Refugee Crisis (Updated)

As Crimea Crisis Unfolds, Russia Facing Potential Ukrainian Refugee Crisis -- Forbes

Russia might be on the verge of a humanitarian crisis as hundreds of thousands of pro-Russian Ukrainians flee to Russia out of fear of revolution, Russia’ Federal Border Guard Service said this weekend.

News agency Itar-Tass cited the Service on Sunday saying that upwards of 675,000 Ukrainians have hightailed it out of the southeastern part of Ukraine between January and February. A three months long political crisis continues to heat up in the country of 45.5 million. Pro-Russian and pro-Western Ukrainians appear to be on the cusp of a revolution that could tear the country apart.

“If ‘revolutionary chaos’ in Ukraine continues, hundreds of thousands of refugees will flow into bordering Russian regions,” read a statement by the Service.

On Saturday, Russian migration authorities reported that 143,000 requests for asylum had been sent to Russia within a two-week period.

My Comment: It is hard to get confirmation on these media reports of Russians fleeing Ukraine .... the only western news agency that is covering this news story is AFP .... and they are just quoting Russian sources. In my own personal case .... as of this evening .... my cousin's son and daughter are out of the country (they live in Kiev). My aunt's eldest son and his family have left for Russia (they live in Kharkiv). And my uncle .... who lives in Bila Tserkva (where my father was born) .... no one has heard from him for the past few days but he did mention to my cousin that he was going to stay at his country home until this is all blown over. I have two other cousins .... and they would leave with their families if they could. All of my relatives are telling me the same thing .... intimidation and threats from Ukrainians against Russians are escalating, and with Russian military forces on the move .... Russian - Ukrainian tensions are increasing.
