‘Top Gun’ School For U.S. Ship Officers Coming Soon

The amphibious assault ships of Commander, Task Force Fifty One (CTF-51) come together in an unprecedented formation during operations in the North Arabian Gulf. This marked the first time that six large deck amphibious ships from the East and West coasts have deployed together in one area of operation. Led by the flag ship USS Tarawa (LHA 1), the ships are (from left to right): USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Saipan (LHA 2), and USS Boxer (LHD 4). 'Top Gun' School For Ships Coming -- UT San Diego

Navy launches San Diego command for best and brightest ship officers

The Navy is launching a San Diego-based “Top Gun” school for young ship officers, modeling it on the aviator version that Hollywood made famous.

The point is to create a generation of Navy “ship drivers” who are experts at tactics the United States hasn’t used in pitched battle since World War II — the guns, missiles, torpedoes and aircraft intended to defend their ship and fight others.

The school is starting up as the Navy is poised to embrace futuristic weapons — a laser gun and a super-fast cannon called a rail gun — and as the Chinese military inches closer to posing a credible threat to U.S. dominance in the Pacific.
