General Dempsey: US Ready For Military Response To Russia If Crimean Conflict Escalates -- Kyiv Post

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States General Martin Dempsey has claimed that in the case of an escalation of unrest in Crimea, the U.S. Army is ready to back up Ukraine and its allies in Europe with military actions.

According to the Web site of the Atlantic Council, Dempsey said that "he's been talking to his military counterparts in Russia, but he's also sending a clear message to Ukraine and members of NATO that the U.S. military will respond militarily if necessary."

"We're trying to tell [Russia] not to escalate this thing further into Eastern Ukraine, and allow the conditions to be set for some kind of resolution in Crimea. We do have treaty obligations with our NATO allies. And I have assured them that if that treaty obligation is triggered [in Europe], we would respond," Dempsey said.

My Comment: A U.S. red line? This is something that I expect President Obama to say .... not the top U.S. General.

After Syria you'll probably never hear Obama make any statements like that again.

Good point James. I never saw it that way until now.

You have to look at Obama and the US democrats behavior through the lens of domestic politics. This is all consuming to them. You also cannot over state the importance democrats attach to Obama (and he to himself oddly). He has been more of a magic talisman than political leader and the power of the talisman lies in it's apparent magic. When he made the "red line statement" and then blatantly abandoned it, a lot of the aura wore off. Same can be said for "If you like your policy, you can keep it". This can never be allowed to happen again, so it will be subordinates only who will make statements. And if it doesn't work out then it and they can be easily repudiated, but if it does then it's Obama's 100%.
