Barack Obama swooped into the Crimea crisis today in a desperate bid to rescue the region from war as advancing Russian troops strong-armed Ukraine into a wholesale retreat.

Flanked by a squadron of Marine-Corps gunships, the U.S. President arrived in Amsterdam by helicopter to press Europe's leaders to further punish Russia for annexing the peninsular.

And speaking ahead of the summit, his British counterpart, David Cameron, revealed that the G8 group of industrialised nations will not meet in Russia despite it being timetabled to take place in Sochi this June.

'We should be clear there's not going to be a G8 summit this year in Russia. That's absolutely clear,' Cameron said.
