Momentum Builds To Save The A-10

Protecting the A-10: Lawmakers oppose removing A-10s from the US Air Force's fleet, but they will have to find a budget offset to keep the attack planes flying. (Master Sgt. Becky Vanshur/US Air Force)

Air Force Plan To Get Rid Of A-10s Runs Into Opposition -- Washington Post

It’s often called the military’s ugliest aircraft, a snub-nosed tank of a plane that’s nicknamed “Warthog” for its appearance and ferocity. The A-10 Thunderbolt II has been the Air Force’s equivalent of an in-the-trenches grunt for almost 40 years: heavily armed and armored, designed to fly low and take out the enemy at close range.

But now, after the plane’s career has spanned from the Cold War to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Pentagon has proposed retiring the fleet as part of across-the-board cuts in defense spending. Let's see...Get rid of the A-10. Get rid of the Hellfire. Get rid of the Tomahawk. Get rid of the fighting Generals. Tell Marines that having less pay and more restrictions is good for them. Take many regulatory steps designed to counter good order and discipline, especially in front line combat units. Make the Armed Services 'kinder, gentler, and greener'.

Purchase Littoral combat systems that are worse than useless. Cut our CVBG force by a third or more. Cut our submarine force. Don't upgrade our nuclear arsenal. Reduce our purchase of highly effective and greatly feared aircraft. Increase our purchases of useless, overly complex aircraft.

Renege on our promises of protection.

Tell me. If you WANTED to destroy the US as a global power...what would you do differently?
