Ukraine: 16 Killed In Attack On Soldiers In Donetsk -- CNN
Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) -- Sixteen people were killed an attack overnight on soldiers in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, local health officials said, in the latest spike in violence ahead of the weekend's presidential election.
At least 13 of those who died in Donetsk were soldiers, according to acting President Oleksandr Turchynov.
Another soldier was killed in a strike on a military convoy in the Luhansk region, the Defense Ministry said earlier, bringing the death toll overnight to at least 14 Ukrainian troops.
Donetsk region's Health Department said 16 people had died in total and that 32 were hospitalized across the region, but did not specify how many were soldiers.

Can you explain what happened here? Did the Ukrainian army (supported by helicopter, it seems) take a drubbing when it went after a checkpoint manned by pro-Russian separatists? Or sis something else happen? If the former, how is it these guys are beating the Ukrainians so badly? Do you think there are Russian special forces with them? Thanks for your insight.
17 soldiers killed. Dozens wounded. This was not a Ukrainian checkpoint being stormed by pro-Russian separatists ... this was something else. From the pictures and videos it looks like it was a convoy with helicopter support that got ambushed by a large number of men with weapons powerful enough to knock out armored vehicles .... and that is all that we know.
There are more questions than answers in this firefight .... and the Ukrainian authorities are not being helpful in explaining what happened. On the rebel side .... they are being very quiet which tells me that even they do not know who did this.
Thanks. It is quite mysterious. And here it seemed Russia was pulling back from armed conflict whike this incident looks like a very professional job.
