The head of Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission secretariat, Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhil, stepped down on Monday amid allegations that he organized a fraudulent run-off vote, charges he denied. Reuters

Mr. Amarkhil Denies Any Involvement in Fraud

KABUL—Afghanistan's chief electoral officer Ziaulhaq Amarkhil, accused by presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah of perpetrating massive fraud, resigned on Monday, in a move that may help defuse the country's political crisis.

The resignation came just a day after Mr. Abdullah's campaign released wiretaps of phone conversations in which Mr. Amarkhil allegedly discussed ways of rigging the June 14 presidential election in favor of former finance minister Ashraf Ghani. Mr. Amarkhil on Monday said these recordings are fabricated, and denied any involvement in fraud.

My Comment: The audio of him planning widespread electoral fraud is damning .... the credibility of this vote has now been completely undermined.
