Exclusive: Alarmed By Iraq, Iran Open To Shared Role With U.S. - Iran Official -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Shi'te Muslim Iran is so alarmed by Sunni insurgent gains in Iraq that it may be willing to cooperate with Washington in helping Baghdad fight back, a senior Iranian official told Reuters.

The idea is being discussed internally among the Islamic Republic's leadership, the senior Iranian official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official had no word on whether the idea had been raised with any other party.

Officials say Iran will send its neighbor advisers and weaponry, although probably not troops, to help its ally Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki check what Tehran sees as a profound threat to regional stability, officials and analysts say.

My Comment: One should not be surprised by these signals coming from Iran. The Iranians do not want .... nor do they have the resources .... to commit the tens of thousands of soldiers that would be necessary to stabilize the security situation in Iraq. The prospect of a long drawn out insurgency against their forces is also a prospect that I am sure they are not relishing .... but on the flip side losing their Shiite allies in Baghdad and having a radical Sunni controlled region on their border is a prospect that I suspect is also unacceptable to them. There are no good choices for Iran .... which is probably why they are hoping for the U.S. to step up and deploy their resources and firepower and handle this crisis for them.

We should do nothing.

Make the Iranians used up their resources. Maybe they will stop their nuke program or it will slow down.

Any money spent in Iraq is less money for espionage or terrorism.

Maybe the stress and strain of combat in Iraq will cause the Mullah regime to fall with in 3 or 4 years.
