Ukraine Launches Dual Talks With Russia to End Fighting In East And Avert Gas Cut -- The Guardian
EU-mediated talks pose challenge to President Poroshenko's commitment to Europe and vow to end deadly insurgency.
Ukraine has launched dual-track negotiations with Russia aimed at averting a debilitating gas cut and ending a bloody separatist insurgency by the end of the week.

My Comment: I have no confidence in these talks. Ukraine has no money .... so the EU will need to step up to guarantee payments on Ukraine's gas debt to Russia. Unfortunately .... this is only going to be a temporary fix because it will not solve Ukraine's underlying economic problems. As to the insurgency .... Ukraine president Poroshenko has made it very clear that he will not negotiate with the rebels in the east .... he is hoping that by talking with Russia he will be able to convince them to "neuter" the insurgency. My prediction .... even if Russia wanted to, they are not capable of putting a lid on this rebellion. As I have mentioned more than once in this blog .... the people in the eastern part of Ukraine have a long history of being independent and stubborn .... they are not going to listen to Kiev or Moscow .... especially if they are forced to.
1 comment:
1. What wil happen in Ukraine if Russia cut the gas?
2. If EU gives Ukraine gas via reverse pipe payment and Russia cuts it wil it lead to sanctions or a cold war?
