Did Cuban Intelligence Try To Smear A U.S. Senator?

Sen. Robert Menendez Seeks Probe Of Alleged Cuban Plot To Smear Him -- Washington post

Sen. Robert Menendez is asking the Justice Department to pursue evidence obtained by U.S. investigators that the Cuban government concocted an elaborate plot to smear him with allegations that he cavorted with underage prostitutes, according to people familiar with the discussions.

In a letter sent to Justice Department officials, the senator’s attorney asserts that the plot was timed to derail the political rise of Menendez (D-N.J.), one of Washington’s most ardent critics of the Castro regime. At the time, Menendez was running for reelection and was preparing to assume the powerful chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

My Comment: Why would Cuba go through all of this trouble to smear him? There are many Cuban critics in the U.S. Senate .... what makes him special? I suspect that we will never know. But what we do know is that Sen. Menendez is in the middle of a corruption probe where allegations that he personally intervened in helping Salomon Melgen (a wealthy eye doctor, donor and friend of the senator) on business contracts and over-billing accusations is now gaining steam.

When you are fighting a group, you keep their incompetent people in their job.

Napoleon went looking for incompetent generals to fight or so I heard. If he had 2 converging armies he'd fight the one lead by the dumb general first.

The British gave up on assassinating Hitler. They figured that he was hurting the German War effort. On 2nd though that may have been a mistake. they may have gotten a negotiated end to the war sooner. Then again Himmler might simply have taken over.

The Marines at Khe Sanh refrained form killing an enemy sniper. There were several snipers and every time they would kill one, the sniper would be replaced. One sniper was particularly bad (or maybe he was just smart). So the Marines decided not to engage in counter sniping. The North Vietnamese sniper was not hitting anything. They did not want to kill him and have him be replace by someone better.

If it were me (running a foreign intelligence service) I would leave the Democrats in power. But maybe assist the Republicans or hurt the Democrats so the Republicans stay at a 30 or 40% spoiler. That would be hard to do.

If the Democrats were in sole power, then sooner or later the excuse of "Bush's fault" would not work and they would have to get competent or face a restive electorate (?).

If I were Cuban, I would take out Rep. Gowdy with a scandal (if not him then one of his staff or associates). If the Republicans kept the house, got the Senate (preferably filibuster proof) and got the Presidency. That would be a threat. Assuming they could reign in the Fed and fix the economy. then they could afford to be more hawkish.

A lot of Ifs.
