Gaza Death Toll Soars Above 1,000

Gaza Death Toll Soars Above 1,000 As Ceasefire Reveals Horrors -- The Telegraph

A lull in fighting between Israel and Hamas allows Gaza City's residents to survey the extent of damage in the attack.

The people of Nazaz street in Gaza City returned home during the 12 hour ceasefire in hostilities not to resume their lives but to bury their dead and pick over the remains of their possessions.

The homes that once lined this street in the eastern suburb of Shejaiya have been pulverised beyond recognition.

Where once there were crowded apartment blocks, three or four storeys high, now there are fetid heaps of rubble. Shops and businesses have been replaced by craters, filth and debris.

A 12-hour ceasefire in Gaza, called first by Israel and then Hamas, the radical Islamist movement, revealed the scale of the destruction wrought by this 19-day conflict.

My Comment:  You would think that after decades of war everyone would be fed-up with the destruction and demand that it be stopped .... sadly .... I expect this ceasefire to end like all the others and the war to continue .... like all the others.

" for a few hours, Gaza was free of the thunder-claps of bombardment. Shops and banks reopened and streets bustled with traffic."
Complete and utter destruction!

Ask yourself why Israel doesn't just end it all and defeat her enemies completely? Who benefits from the on/off warfare? If Israel were to completely destroy her enemies she would lose her victim/protected class status which serves her very well in the u.s. So always acting the martyr and acting in self defense helps Israel maintain its status as needing protection/support from the U.S. It goes on and on because protected status has many benefits.

The same argument can just as well apply to the Palestinians.

James, the Palestinians are protected? 1,000 dead, mostly women and children. Imagine that many Israelis died, you would never hear the end of it. Hannity would have every mayor of Jerusalem since ben gurion to complain. Also $5 billion plus per year of aid, contracts, you name it. And that's what we know about. Did I mention Hollywood, the FED, wall street? I heard Ralph Peters say on Hannity "Israel is US". How much more protected can you be?

@James I think you are right in the sense that Hamas needs the Palestinian people to be perpetual 'martyrs'.

Many are (rightly) horrified by the deaths of civilians that they can't see Hamas hiding right behind them.

Free Palestine? Free the Palestinian people from Hamas and we may be half way to a lasting peace.

Hamas NEEDS to make "Palestinians" martyrs or they are just some thugs firing rockets into Israel. What amazes me is how many people buy into it.

The reason we don't see deaths in Israel like in Gaza is because of the Iron Dome and their early warning system. Take those away and all of those Hamas rockets would add up to a lot of dead Israelites. If some guy (Hamas) came up to me (Israel) on the street on my way home from work and threw a punch at me but I blocked him and kicked him in the family jewels would I be in the wrong? If he ran to a news anchor on the street and said I kicked him in the jewels and he didn't do anything to me (because I blocked his punch) would I be portrayed as a bad guy?

Utterly amazing to me that Hamas can set up rocket batteries in schools, hospitols , and neighborhoods and yet the world cries foul when Israel blows up hospitols, schools, and neighborhoods. Guess what Gaza, quit allowing Hamas To make you martyrs by allowing Hamas to lob rockets out of your schools and Israel will stop making martyrs out of your school children.

It's like that angry Israeli woman wrote, something to the effect of "So sorry we have such good deffenses that we intercept rocket after rocket without losing our citizens. So sorry we aren't amassing the spectacular casualties Gazans are."
