More Than A Dozen US Spies Infiltrate German Ministries Says Bild -- Deutsche Welle
The CIA has recruited more than a dozen spies in several German government ministries, according to the Bild am Sonntag tabloid paper. Earlier, Chancellor Merkel said she doubts the US will end its aggressive espionage.
The alleged spies have infiltrated the German defense, development, economic, and interior ministries, reported Bild on Sunday, citing unnamed sources within the US intelligence community.
CIA interest in the Development Ministry stems from Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the BND, using the ministry as cover for clandestine operations.
Due to the diplomat row between Berlin and Washington, the spies are reportedly not meeting with their US handlers at the moment. US intelligence agencies are considering basing their recruitment activities in Warsaw or Prague due to the growing pressure in Germany, according to Bild.

My Comment: What I find fascinating about this spy case is how the U.S. media (and political class) are reacting to this scandal .... some blame the CIA for keeping the President in the dark (which I doubt), some blame the Russians ????? .... but the best one is from the U.S. chairman of the House of Representatives' intelligence committee .... he is blaming the Germans.

I read the Daily Beast article that was linked on this blog.
The Americans had the German's blessing, when they spied on communists who were West German citizens.
If Green is the new Red, it makes sense to spy on the Green Party. Although this makes for some very bad politics if you are discovered. IMHO the Greens have as much to apologize for as Al Gore. They put people out of work and they are not very knowledgeable.
I am going to be hard pressed to find a news article on the internet about the mining of Haiphong harbor and the German and French reaction to it.
If memory serves me correctly, when the U.S. mined Haiphong harbor during the Vietnam War, the USSR said nothing.they kept their merchant ships in harbor.they were winning, they knew it and they knew the inconvenience of not being able to sail their ships was expensive but minor.
The Germans and French, American allies, on the other hand squealed like stuck pigs. They sold to the North Vietnam in the 1960s & 1970s and they are selling to Iran and other pariah nations now.

I do not understand people, who spy on their own countries for money.
$34,000 for 200 documents works out to $170 per document.
Maybe the money was in addition to doing the right thing in their opinion.
I have a foreign born spouse. They intensely dislike the oligarchs that run their native country. But you do not talk s___ about their country. Not unless you want to get pwned.
"The German government publicly ordered the CIA’s station chief in Berlin to leave the country Thursday. A similar request was not issued to his Russian counterpart.
Russia’s connections to Germany extend far beyond its intelligence and security services, however. German defense contractors have helped train and equip the Russian military.
And, as Foreign Policy magazine recently noted, “Germany maintains closer relations to Russia than any other country in the European Union; Germany is Russia's third-largest trade partner… while Russia sells Germany over a third of its natural gas and oil.”
After leaving his post as Germany’s Chancellor in 2005, Gerhard Schroder became the head of the shareholder’s committee of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline project that pumped Russia’s natural gas directly into Germany."

Well, Herr Schroder is bought and paid for IMO. He proably sees it differently as a fellow traveler.
As noted in the article the help equip and train the Russian military. That is different than the military cooperation of the 1920s.
There were 3 partitions of Poland in the 18th century. In 1939 Poland was partitioned again.
Will history repeat itself?
I realize that I posted 4 times, but this bugs me.
It's always amazing that people are shocked that spies, spy.
