Major Military Defeat For Yemen's Government Against Shi'ite Muslim Fighters

Yemeni Shi'ites Capture City After Fighting Kills 200 -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Shi'ite Muslim fighters captured one of the main cities in northern Yemen on Tuesday, a local official and residents said, after fighting that has killed at least 200 people and puts the Shi'ites on the outskirts of the capital.

The fall of Omran represents a major blow to the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has been trying to stabilise the U.S.-allied country following nearly three years of turmoil that forced his predecessor to step down.

The Shi'ite Houthis, named after the tribe of their leader, said their fight was against rivals loyal to the Islamist Islah party, and they had no intention of attacking the capital Sanaa, just south of Omran.

My Comment: Because of it's isolated location .... there is not much news coverage on this conflict in this part of Yemen. But if the news from Reuters is accurate .... this is a significant defeat for the Yemen government, and it will probably result in greater Saudi and U.S. military involvement (probably sooner rather than later). I will be updating this story as more news and information arrives.

Yemen is remote.

I don't mean to be snide, but we are talking about Americans.

Anything outside of Europe Latin America, Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand and Austria is remote.

To some extent outside of a certain social class middle class or above or upper middle class and above it is all remote.

There are about 195 countries. Take out some pacific islands countries , Andorra ans such and maybe we are talking about 150 to 170 countries. Americans should bloody well be able to know where they are and basic facts about them.

Maybe I don't know my own countrymen. WNU you have a good track record. I am willing to listen. I will no doubt learn something.

Many Americans did not know where Afghanistan or Iraq were either. It makes you wonder why we even have a school system.

To have news stories that Americans do not know where country 'X' is de rigueur for American news programs. Maybe they exaggerate

The U.S. media and it's education system are the two American institutions that always bewilder and disappoint me (politics is the third) Fortunately .... there are some nuggets about the U.S. that gives me hope .... to begin .... there are some good U.S. media outlets and there are some excellent American universities. And we need not forget that the U.S. has also produced great leaders like Washington, Adams, Lincoln, Reagan, etc.. Great Generals like Grant, Sherman, Pershing, Nimitz, and MacCarthur, Advances in the sciences, technology, and medicine .... incredible literature and a culture that the entire world now wants to emulate .... and they also wrote that great document known as the U.S. constitution which codified the principle (for the first time in history) that government is there to serve the people .... and not the other way around.

Yup .... there are some nuggets and I have confidence that history will give us even more nuggets from the U.S. .... as well as disappointments.
