Engine-Fire Fallout Keeps Lockheed Martin Joint Strike Fighter From Farnborough Air Show
WASHINGTON—The Pentagon scuttled the highly anticipated international debut of the military's advanced F-35 fighter jet, citing safety concerns arising from a recent engine fire.
Although the military cleared the F-35 for limited flights early Tuesday, the Pentagon said hours later that safety restrictions made it impossible to fly the plane to England to take part in the Farnborough International Air Show.
The decision deals a blow to the closely scrutinized Pentagon program and to the defense contractors building the next-generation jet fighter. Lockheed Martin Corp. makes the F-35 and Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp., builds the plane's engines.
