U.S. Imposes New Sanctions On Russia Over Ukraine -- CNN

(CNN) -- The Treasury Department on Wednesday escalated sanctions against Russian businesses and individuals relating to Russia's "continued attempts to destabilize eastern Ukraine" and its "ongoing occupation of Crimea."

The latest action targets some of Russia's largest banks and energy companies, including Gazprom Bank, Novotek and Rosneft. They will not be able to raise debt or get new financing via the United States. Arms entities were also included.

"Russia has continued to destabilize Ukraine and provide support for the separatists, despite its statements to the contrary," said David Cohen, the Treasury undersecretary for for terrorism and financial Intelligence.

My Comment: These sanctions are now getting serious. Rosneft is a critical company in Russia's economy .... by being sanctioned it will be seriously impacted when raising capital for it's projects.

I think this means the Ukraine's efforts are falling far short of expectations and they and the US and the EU are trying to spook Putin. Winter is coming soon and they know it.

I concur James .... throughout history winter has always been Russia's ally.

We'll see. The next six to ten weeks should see a much higher tempo of Ukrainian operations. If they don't take the population centers by then, as bad as it could be in the cities it'll be much worse for the Ukes out in the open. WNU you have some personal knowledge of the area. Starting at the end of August what's the general weather like there? Wet, dry, cold, very cold?

I don't see Europe bringing down strong sanctions with a reliance on Russian gas. Russia has a lot of allies it could divert it's trade to I.e Brazil, Cuba, China, India, etc. It's not like it'll be the end of the world for Russia. They can just switch up markets. Everyone knows the U.S dollar days are numbered for global currency. Like Ukraine Putin can just bide his time. He doesn't need to take anyone's bs. When it comes to foreign policy he's a pro at outmaneuver the U.S

Rasputina refers to the fall (or spring?) rains when it turns everything to mud that is not a road.

Jason Lacombe is probably right about switching markets. The dollar is falling form reserve currency status and everyone knows it except Democrat politicians an Low Information Voters.

All the things the Democrat pols like to do to stay in power cause inflation and tank the economy when you do not have reserve currency status.

At the end of August the weather is actually very comfortable .... the humidity and high temperatures that everyone hates will be going away. In September .... the nights start to get cold with the rains coming in. October .... rain and damp weather. November .... cold .... frost on the ground. December to March .... bitterly cold. If the gas dispute is not resolved by October/November .... people will start to worry. December .... anger. January/February .... a national emergency.
