Destroy Hamas? Something Worse Would Follow: Pentagon Intel Chief -- Reuters

(Reuters) - A top Pentagon intelligence official warned on Saturday that the destruction of Hamas would only lead to something more dangerous taking its place, as he offered a grim portrait of a period of enduring regional conflict.

The remarks by Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, the outgoing head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, came as Israeli ministers signaled that a comprehensive deal to end the 20-day-old conflict in the Gaza Strip appeared remote.

At least 1,050 Gazans - mostly civilians - have been killed, and 42 Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israel have died.

Flynn disparaged Hamas for exhausting finite resources and know-how to build tunnels that have helped them inflict record casualties on Israelis. Still, he suggested that destroying Hamas was not the answer.

My Comment: I guess Lieutenant General Michael Flynn follows this rule .... "better the Devil you know rather than the Devil that you do not know".

Mr. Michael Flynn is wrong.

Hamas already has in its' charter the destruction of Israel.

We already know the other actors like Islamic jihad and one other that operate out of the Gaza strip. They also want the destruction of Israel.

Hamas several years ago went house to house and wiped out supporters or members of the Fatah faction in Gaza. So they are ruthless to like minded people. Islamic jihad will do the same to Hamas if given an opportunity.

The only way another group could be worse is if they upped their operational tempo or got more of the populace to "pull" for the cause.

I assume the general does not want to mess with Hamas. But at some point they will mess with us.

So do we want to mess with them before or after they consume Israel. It is like do we want to take on the NAZIs before or after they get the SKODA works?

He might be right if ISIS shows up in Jerusalem with some of that Iraqi uranium.

"He might be right if ISIS shows up in Jerusalem with some of that Iraqi uranium."

They would have to convert the uranium into a military usable form.

They cannot do that without centrifuges.

Funny they found one buried in some Iraqi scientist's back yard. This was after UNSCOM said there was nothing left. The Saddam regime could not have buried others?

Or maybe the Iranian will process it for them for a fee and a ceasefire. If they get Israel destroyed without it being traceable to them a ceasefire with ISIS of 10 years (Islamic law), they could do it. Iran has supplied Al Qaeda and Sunni before.

After all Kerry and Obama will only be tough on Israel but never Iran.

I guess that could happen. I wasn't thinking anything sophisticated like enrichment. My guess is that it gets used as a dirty bomb.

Theoretically, you can trace fissile material to where it was mined.

This was part of the plot the 'Sum of all fears".

This is also the *assertion* of the author of the book "Red Star Rogue". The *alleged* conspirators in the CCCP thought that an attack on Pearl Harbor using a nuke that had been built with uranium mined in China from a sub type known to have been sold to china might result in both China and the U.S. becoming cut down in size.

Not let's suppose that is true. Forget the Soviet angle. Let's look at the human psychology angle. If this really did happen and people really are capable of this type of thinking, then it is not out of the realm of probability that Iran would enrich ISIS's uranium and help them build a bomb (after they have enough of their own of course) and let ISIS take out (or try to take out Israel and get the crap beat of them. With ISIS and Israel out of the way Iran can expand its' influence.

Of course with ISIS & Israel out of the way maybe Iran becomes the little Satan and the U.S. remains the big Satan.

The danger in such a plot ... using others to blame others that may result in a war among your adversaries .... is that you may get caught and unveiled. In that case .... if Iran is caught working with ISIS to build and deliver a WMD .... the blow-back will be enormous and probably nuclear. Best to leave this alone.
