Army To Replace 9mm Pistol With More Reliable Gun Packing Better 'Knock Down’ Power -- FOX News

The Army wants to retire its supply of 9mm handguns and replace it with a more accurate and user-friendly model that also will provide soldiers with more “knock-down” power.

Army officials say their inventory of more than 200,000 semi-automatic Beretta M9 and Sig Sauer M11 pistols has become outdated, worn out and needs to be replaced with an updated model that also offers more reliability and durability.

They also are considering new ammunition, which has sparked considerable debate among military and civilian weapons experts, too.

“Advancements in firearms have taken place since the M9 was adopted nearly 30 years ago, and it is our intent to take advantage of these advancements,” a military spokesperson told FoxNews.com on Friday. “The Army is seeking to replace the M9 and M11 pistols with a handgun that is more accurate, ergonomic, reliable and durable than the current pistol.”

My Comment: After 30 years I am sure there has been some improvements in how handguns operate .... but if the current works .... should it still be replaced/fixed? Comments and opinions will be appreciated.

I am not a weapon exspert, pernhaps they can try to make pistols that can shoot higher caliber bullets with more "force and make a scope that helps with aiming, I think they have somthing to help with aiming in works if i am right? Sorry if this is a bit bad formulated and i am not so good with weapons this is just some, brainstorming or "light ideas".

We (the US) learned the same lesson over a hundred years ago during the Philippine Insurrection. The Huks would get hopped up on the local drugs, wrap primitive body armor around them, and keep charging after being hit with our .38 (basically 9mm) ammunition. That was when we switched to the .45 M1911, which did quite well up through Viet Nam. The Beretta M9 decision in the 80s was essentially an attempt at commonality with NATO. Don't get me wrong - there are some advantages to 9mm, but it is always a trade-off. Don't ever expect a one-shot, one-kill solution with a pistol (that's right - Hollywood is not reality), but you're more likely to achieve that with a .45.

The new intermediate-range rounds (such as .40 or 10mm) are not achieving the success that was expected from their proponents, and I believe they will continue to fade, or they ought to.

Now here we are, back to where we were a century ago. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

I'd call the M9 useless, but that's an insult to useless.

I know of people who've shot AQI in the face and neck five times and were trying to pistol whip the guy off them when their buddy blew the AQI's head off with a shotgun.

Bring back a modern build of the M1911 in .45ACP.

Orion,
The public has no idea how much punishment a bad guy can take and keep coming at you. They really do think it's like the movies.

The 1911 has always been my favorite handgun .... my uncle had one and I always enjoyed firing it. The Russian GSh-18 is also sweet .... this gun is standard for the Russian military.

I see a small chunk of solid copper shaped like a hollow point rifle bullet (sub-5.56?)with a tungsten core in a heavy pistol case (.45 .40 necked down ) driven to rifle velocities. Something to blow through armor at close range, something flying fast enough to completely grenade after a few inches of penetration. Longish ported barrel, light trigger with a 1911 style handgrip safety and a thumb safety. 2¢
