What If Iraqi Military Can't Defeat ISIL? -- Defense News

WASHINGTON — For the United States, it would be the worst-case scenario: Iraq’s ethnic groups are unable — or unwilling — to form a unity government, and the country’s military is deemed irreparable.

Senior US military officials have deployed what they are calling “assessment teams” to Iraq to provide President Barack Obama and his top aides with a better picture of the situation.

Administration officials and lawmakers are waiting for those six teams to report back on the state of the largely disbanded Iraqi military, and what it might take to rebuild it.

My Comment: To begin .... there has to be an acceptance in Washington that ISIS has won it's war against Iraq's central government and army .... and the only question that needs to be asked is where will ISIS stop. The Iraqi military and security forces have been significantly degraded and destroyed .... it will probably take years to rebuild the army .... and only under certain conditions with the first one being a change in Iraqi government and leadership. Unfortunately .... this will only mean that ISIS will have the time to strengthen and consolidate their power and position in the territories that they control .... they are in for the "long haul" .... and any attempt to "kick them out" is going to long and bloody. To say that there are any quick solutions or answers to this crisis is a foolish one. As I have said .... this is going to be a long conflict, and there is no guarantee on what the eventual outcome will be.
